Building a Foundation for Women in Screen-based Media

Last year, the Foundation awarded eight bursaries to women who are underrepresented in the screen-based sector—Aboriginal and culturally-diverse women, women with disabilities, and women with limited financial means—giving them access to valuable educational programs and industry networks. Thanks to an individual donor, the Janet Crystal Yorga Memorial Bursary enabled a team of two to participate in the 2011 WIFT-T Development Incubator. This four-day intensive program provides producer/writer teams with coaching and feedback from industry experts in order to advance their market-driven feature film projects.

We are deeply honored and grateful to have been the first awarded prairie team for the Janet Crystal Yorga Memorial Bursary. Without the financial support of the bursary, none of this would have been possible, and I can honestly say that this has been one of the highlights of my producing career. The lectures, training, networking and feedback we received were first rate, incredibly informative, and essential to building the knowledge and confidence we need to move this project ahead into production. Thank you so much for this opportunity of a lifetime! Teri Armitage and Stephen Huszar, Hulo Films

The 2011 Crystal Awardsone of the biggest fundraising events of the year for the Foundation—was another spectacular affair and the first at our new venue, The Ritz-Carlton, Toronto. Thank you to all those who purchased Foundation Tables and Seats. The 2012 Crystal Awards will take place in late November or early December.
