2011 Deluxe Producer Internship

Erika Allison Yearwood, 2010

The three weeks spent at Deluxe provided an excellent overview of everything to do with Post, down to some of the finer details that many Producers tend to overlook. I feel confident that I am better-equipped to create and produce projects that are viable, well planned out, and can be easily transformed into various formats for broadcasters, as well as the emerging platforms (online viewing, mobile, etc).

Through working with members of Deluxe staff—who each provided me with their insight and opinion on what producers should be aware of—I now realize how significant each step of the postproduction process is, and how planning, scheduling and production organization are essential.

The time I spent in the Theatre (audio, optical), Digital Intermediate (smoke editing), Quality Control, Encoding and Media Management departments was particularly useful. Each department related to areas in my previous work and provided practical information on the future of productions, troubleshooting and managing media miles for future use and distribution. I look forward to the possibility of returning to Deluxe down the road, with my own projects coming through their doors.

On November 2, 2009, I embarked on what would become one of the most unique and enriching learning experiences of my professional career.

On the first day, I was given a royal welcome—including a tour of all departments and introduction to department heads and numerous Deluxe employees. I was truly humbled when Dan McClellan, Executive Vice President, invited me into his office for a warm welcome chat. He asked me about my aspirations in this industry and what I hope to achieve from the internship, and provided insightful commentary on the state of film and television in Toronto. I was greatly honored to have the EVP of Deluxe North America take the time to sit down and welcome me to his team.

I had the opportunity to shadow two extremely talented digital intermediate directors, Pietro Gallo and Eric Myles, who gave me various useful tips that every offline editor should adhere to. I also had the very rare privilege of sitting in on a Digital Intermediate Conforming session with director George Hickenlooper and his DP Adam Swica for the feature film Casino Jack, starring Kevin Spacey. This particular session was one of my most memorable, because it’s not every day that somebody can shadow a well-known director while he is color grading his film in its rawest form.

Polly Washburn, 2008

The WIFT-Toronto Deluxe Internship was hugely beneficial to my understanding of the ins and outs of postproduction. The professionals at Deluxe were very generous with their time and knowledge, and I got a great overview of the entire postproduction workflow.

As a production manager and producer, I’ve used what I learned to make more accurate estimates of post budgets and timelines. As a producer, I communicate more effectively with editors and other post personnel and have a better idea of what’s possible and not possible to work on in the editing suite.
