The Crystal Awards recognize the extraordinary achievements of women in film, television, and digital media. An independent jury of past award recipients selected the winners for 2009. Award winners were honoured at the 2009 Crystal Awards gala luncheon on November 30 at the Fairmont Royal York hotel in Toronto.

Award Categories

Nominees have a minimum of 10 years experience in screen-based media. The 2009 Crystal Award winners are:

International Achievement Award: Shirley Douglas
This award is presented to a Canadian woman working in screen-based media for her significant and well recognized body of work in Canada and abroad.

Outstanding Achievement Award: Christine Shipton
Awarded to a woman who has made a major contribution to screen-based media through the consistent quality of her work throughout her career. Through personal example and leadership, she has inspired and set standards for women and men working in the screen-based industry.

Creative Excellence Award: Tassie Cameron
Awarded to a woman in recognition of the creative excellence and dynamic quality of her work in screen-based media. The recipient’s recent work has received national and/or international attention in the previous year and has established a standard for those working in screen-based media.  

Mentorship Award: Lisa Meeches
Awarded to a woman who has made an outstanding contribution to building women’s careers in screen-based media. The mentor supports the advancement of women, offers guidance and support, and/or assists female entrepreneurs in growing their own media companies.

Special Jury Award of Distinction: Christa Singer
Awarded at the discretion of the jury, this award honours a woman who is a trailblazer and committed to the screen-based industry. The winner is dedicated to building a vibrant, diverse, and active creative community.
