Business Management for Media Professionals Program Curriculum
Industry Fundamentals
Industry Fundamentals is designed to introduce emerging media professionals to the business fundamentals of the screen-based industry. Through core business concepts, participants learn about the environment and the nature of the Canadian media industry. Participants emerge with a stronger understanding of the who, what, why and how of the Canadian industry in a global context.

Financing and Rights
Financing and Rights focuses on public, private and alternate financing options, as well as the negotiation of broadcast and distribution agreements. Downstream and alternate revenue streams are also explored, along with basic principles of contract, partnership, intellectual property, copyright law, commercial exploitation of rights and the need for expert support in these areas. This module is recommended for those who want to enhance financial planning and budgetary skills in the independent production sector.

Marketing and Distribution
Marketing and Distribution will illustrate the importance of sales to a content producer’s bottom line. Participants receive insight on effective sales materials, from a “stop-them-in-their-tracks” proposal to email marketing. Analysis on the distribution process will include the sales and marketing cycle, as well as key distribution agreement terms and conditions. Real-life examples will be deconstructed and discussed to examine how content producers can get the best return from partnerships with international distributors and/or content platforms.

Production Management
Production Management enables participants to manage the creation and launch of screen-based media projects. The module examines critical methods for content creation and offers strategies that maximize resources and time frames. Management methods, timelines and project life cycles are examined with a focus on supporting business growth and interactive project properties.

Production Accounting
Production Accounting explores the role and responsibilities of the production accountant and staff. Participants follow a detailed analysis of the methods and procedures used by accountants working in various sectors of the screen-based industry. Participants will acquire hard skills and analytical tools through a comprehensive review of bookkeeping and specifics for media production. The module explores budgets and cash flow and is intended to familiarize students with the statements and processes required to manage production accounting.
