Industry Fundamentals

Industry Fundamentals is designed to introduce emerging media professionals to the business fundamentals of the screen-based industry. Through core business concepts, participants learn about the environment and the nature of the Canadian media industry. Participants emerge with a stronger understanding of the who, what, why and how of the Canadian industry in a global context.

Financing and Rights

Financing and Rights focuses on the value of ‘rights’ and how they are exploited commercially by various partnerships. Participants learn about public, private and alternate financing options, as well as the negotiation of broadcast and distribution agreements. Downstream and alternate revenue streams are also explored along with basic principles of contract, partnership, intellectual property, copyright law and the need for expert support in these areas. Recommended for those who want to develop financial planning skills in the independent production sector.

Domestic and International Marketing

Domestic and International Marketing provides an insider’s view of the sales and distribution business while helping participants market their projects. Participants are introduced to the processes and players involved in the buying, selling and marketing of screen-based productions, both fiction and non-fiction, from feature-length to shorts. Producers learn how to avoid costly mistakes by planning their distribution in tandem with their productions. The course incorporates group and individual exercises, role-playing, lectures and discussions.

Production Management (New)

Production Management enables participants to manage the creation and launch of screen-based media projects. The course examines critical methods for content creation and offers strategies that maximize resources and time frames. Management methods, time lines and project life cycles are examined with a focus on supporting business growth. The course also explores the business of managing budgets, cash flow and project team resources.

Production Accounting (New)

Production Accounting explores the role and responsibilities of the production accountant and staff. Participants follow a detailed analysis of the methods and procedures used by accountants working in various sectors of the screen-based industry. Participants will acquire hard skills and analytical tools through a comprehensive review of bookkeeping and specifics for media production. The course is intended to familiarize students with the statements and processes required to operate a production company.
